Beginner Guide Apr 15, 2026 For Beginner

Week-by-week plan for absolute beginners. 15 minutes a day. By day 30 you will play a song.

Ground rules

  • 15 minutes a day, every day > 2 hours once a week
  • Tune before every session
  • If fingers hurt, stop, come back later
  • Record yourself on day 1 — you will cringe later, and love it

Week 1 — One chord

Learn Em. Just this one. Strum it 100 times a day. Goal: clean ringing of all 6 strings, no muted notes.

Week 2 — Second chord + changes

Add D. Practice switching Em → D → Em → D. Your hand will be slow — that is fine. Goal by week end: 1 chord change every 2 seconds.

Week 3 — G + 4-chord loop

Add G. Now loop Em → G → D → G. This loop plays "With or Without You" by U2 and countless other songs. Add light strumming: down-down-up-down-down-up.

Week 4 — First song

Add C. You now know 4 chords: Em, G, D, C. Pick one song you love with these chords. Play it slowly, stop, fix mistakes, play again. By day 30 you will play it end-to-end.

Song suggestions (all 4-chord)

  • "Horse With No Name" — America
  • "Let It Be" — The Beatles (simplified)
  • "Perfect" — Ed Sheeran (simplified)
  • "Wonderwall" — Oasis (needs capo on fret 2)

Day 30 reward
